Cheryl’s List #37 – December 30, 1999

December 30, 1999Cheryl's Listcheryl

1.  Update to Last Cheryl’s List
2.  Update to PDSE

1.  Update to Last Cheryl’s List

In a previous Cheryl’s List, I had a reference to a new Redbook on ‘The Millennium Backup and Recovery’, SG24-5358-00. IBM has removed that manual from the Web site. It will be available only through the IBM ITSO Intranet for IBM employees. Even though it may be too late to help for Y2K, it looks like a handy manual for backup recommendations in general.

2.  Update on PDSE

As many of my students know, I have NOT been a proponent of PDSE libraries for several years because of their instability. In the last TUNING Letter (1999, No. 5), I mentioned that I had talked to four sites who are now having success using PDSE object (i.e. load) libraries. I DID recommend that you apply all current maintenance before using them, however. Now, I would ALSO suggest that you look at a current set of comments by users on the IBM-Main forum in a thread called “PDSE Religious Wars” and “PDF exclusive ENQs.” You can find the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html. Leave the ‘Search for’ blank and enter ‘PDSE’ in the ‘Subject’ area. You may want to limit the search to December 1999 to start with. It’s an interesting discussion with some painful stories and some success stories.

Happy New Year!
